During the installation and commissioning of bucket elevators, reversing the motor power supply wiring is a seemingly simple yet potentially critical operational error. The rotation direction of the bucket elevator’s main shaft is central to the equipment design and directly determines the material lifting direction. As the power source, the motor’s rotation must strictly match this requirement. Never assume motor rotation direction based solely on experience or guesswork—always verify according to the actual requirement of the main shaft.
Preliminarily connect the motor power cables to the terminal box, ensuring the power switch is completely off (OFF position). Station an operator near the elevator with a clear view of the rotation direction of the reducer output shaft (i.e., the main shaft of the elevator) or the transmission wheel (such as a pulley or sprocket). Have the control personnel briefly engage the power switch (for an instant—less than 1 second) to send a very short power pulse to the motor. Observe the rotation direction of the main shaft/transmission wheel. If the observed direction matches exactly the design requirement of the elevator, the wiring is correct.
Only after the jog test confirms that the motor’s rotation direction fully matches the required direction of the main shaft should the power switch be closed to formally start the motor for no-load or load test operation.
A careful jog test is the most reliable safeguard against equipment damage caused by reverse rotation.
